Abstract

The main goal of this article is to present in a participatory innovative approach, by using “multiple voices”, the distinctive features of discovering, identifying, and researching historical photographic resources. The research focuses on the specific case of a car race that took place in Bucharest, at the beginning of the 20th century, emphasizing the role and contribution of the academic milieu as well as that of the participatory “digital democracy” in the process. The first part of the article pictures the events and sources that lead to the discovery of this unusual photographic material, its framework, the cataloguing details, how the material was digitally processed, the preliminary work on metadata, and the dynamics of the photographs in a digital environment. The second part offers a detailed description of the identified car race, in relation with local automobile and military history, concluding with an analysis of the involved institutional actors and a few considerations on the historical and technological framework in which the event took place. The aim of this study is to explore the diverse facets and endings surging from the historical source we discovered.
